No need to manually set up emulators for anything you download from RetroPCart. All our game packages are tested, configured, and bundled with what they need—so you're good to go right out of the box.
But if you're feeling adventurous, or you've got classic games from other sources and want to know how to get them running, this quick guide is for you.
Many of the retro titles you'll see around here were made for MS-DOS, and obviously, your modern PC or Mac doesn't speak DOS natively. That's where emulators like DOSBox step in.
DOSBox is a free tool that mimics the DOS environment on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It’s reliable, lightweight, and pretty easy to get running with a bit of setup. It’s a free software that you can download here.
When you start DOSBox, you’ll see a command-line window.
First, you need to “mount” the folder where your games live using the MOUNT
command (like mount c c:\RETROGAMES
). Then, switch into your game’s directory with CD
and run the game’s .EXE
file.
Bonus: DOSBox runs the same on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Retro for everyone!
If you're into point-and-click adventures—think Monkey Island, Broken Sword, and other classics—ScummVM is your new best friend.
ScummVM doesn’t emulate hardware; instead, it rewrites the original game engines so those classic games can run flawlessly on modern platforms.
Using it is dead simple: open ScummVM, click “Add Game,” point to the game folder, and double-click the title to play. That’s it. You're in.
Now we're getting fancy. The Amiga was a whole different beast, and emulating it can be a bit more involved.
RetroPCart bundles Amiga games with pre-configured emulators like FS-UAE. whenever needed. FS-UAE is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Windows users might also try WinUAE. for a more customizable experience.
Just note: Amiga emulation usually requires extra setup like BIOS/Kickstart ROMs. Make sure to follow tutorials on the emulator's official site.
