Old doesn't mean forgotten. Let's break down what "abandonware" actually means.
We believe classic games still deserve to be played, preserved, and shared with the world. RetroPCArt distributes what many refer to as abandonware — software that’s no longer supported, sold, or even acknowledged by its original creators.
By definition, abandonware typically refers to games that are still under copyright but have been ignored by their developers or publishers. There's usually no customer support, no legal distribution, and often no way to buy them anymore. Want a quick primer? Check out the Wikipedia page.
Even legends like Richard Garriott (Ultima) and Tim Schafer (Grim Fandango) have voiced support for preserving these games.
Not always. While some titles (like Beneath a Steel Sky) have been made freeware, others — such as Lemmings or Disney’s Hercules — are still under copyright but no longer available to purchase or support. This creates a gray area, and many games simply fall through the cracks.
We aim to preserve these games so they aren't lost to time. That said, if you’re uncomfortable with this legal limbo, we totally understand — head over to GOG.com or Steam and support game developers directly by purchasing official versions.
Even if you enjoy a free copy, consider supporting the creators. Use tools like GamesVoyager to search for legit purchase options. For example, if you loved Heroes of Might and Magic, why not buy HoMM III HD on GOG?
If you're a developer, publisher, or IP holder and want your game removed, just let us know. We'll respect your wishes and take action promptly.
Thanks for keeping the classics alive. Take me back to the home page
