Game Review

Asterix & Obelix (1995) is a side-scrolling platformer based on the beloved French comic series. Staying true to the comic’s humor and style, the game lets you play as either Asterix or Obelix while traveling through stages inspired by the Roman Empire and beyond. Each level mixes platforming with combat, where you bash Roman soldiers, jump obstacles, and occasionally solve small environmental challenges.

The visuals are colorful and cartoon-like, closely resembling the comic art style. The Game Boy and SNES versions leaned heavily into charming sprite work, while the DOS and Windows versions offered slightly smoother graphics. The co-op mode was a highlight, allowing two players to enjoy the adventure together.

On the downside, the gameplay could feel repetitive—most levels followed the same “run, jump, punch Romans” formula. The controls were serviceable but not as smooth as other top-tier platformers of the mid-90s like Donkey Kong Country or Rayman. Still, for fans of Asterix, the game captured the spirit of the comics well and remains a nostalgic classic.
