Game Review

Virtua Cop 2 is a landmark arcade shooter that brought fast-paced, cinematic gunplay to both arcades and home platforms in the late 1990s. Originally developed by Sega AM2 and released for arcades in 1995, it was later ported to Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, and PC (Windows), quickly earning a reputation for delivering one of the most polished and immersive light-gun experiences of its time.

Unlike traditional shooters, Virtua Cop 2 is a rail shooter—the player’s movement is automatic, while they aim and shoot enemies using a light gun or mouse. What set the game apart was its use of 3D polygon graphics, a rarity in shooters at the time. Every object, from enemies to barrels and windows, was interactively destructible, immersing players in a vibrant and dynamic urban battlefield.

The game features multiple routes through each level, offering replay value and player choice. You play as one of two police officers (Michael Hardy or James Cools) tasked with dismantling a criminal syndicate. It’s pure action, with tight pacing and waves of enemies that demand quick reflexes and sharp aim.

The PC version allowed keyboard and mouse support, bringing the arcade experience into the home, though it was even better when paired with early PC-compatible light guns.

Virtua Cop 2 stands as a retro arcade gem—its legacy lives on in games like Time Crisis and House of the Dead. For fans of shooting gallery-style games and retro Sega titles, it remains a must-play.
